What’s in a name? The Welsh, who have been in the area from before the 5th century, called this place Abergwuan. The Norse, who had a settlement here, called this place Fiskigarðr. Eventually, with a little influence from the Norse, this place was bestowed the name Fishguard by the English.

With all the confusion around name changes, the French still managed to find the place in 1797 when they tried to invade!
