Newport, Pembs (as referred to, to distinguish it from the few other Newports) was founded after the Norman Lord William Fitzmartin was unceremoniously ousted from his family seat in nearby Nevern by his father-in-law, Lord Rhys. Christmas dinner was never the same after.

Like many other coastal towns, the town fed itself on fish served on pottery. A mediaeval pottery kiln was discovered fully intact. Its size makes experts believe it produced large amounts for trade with pottery from here found at other mediaeval sites all over Wales!

This self-deterministic attitude thrives in modern times. Newport was home to John Seymour, who developed many ideas on self-sufficiency on his land in the 70s and 80s. His books are still in print today!

Discover Newport’s heritage through our audio walking tour, visiting 5 points of interest with over 25 minutes of engaging narration. Rent the tour for 24 hours and access the audio and map. The map not only guides you to the landmarks but also provides suggested routes for a hassle-free exploration. If you feel adventurous, make up your route between landmarks! The map also contains images of what some of the landmarks look like. A castle is pretty easy to identify. But a house in a row of terraces, for instance, is more challenging to identify the right one!
